I have been stalking The Band artistically since Big Pink. I’m glad I never met any of them, I’m sure I would have come off as something between rabidly fawning and scary. My debt to them was never more obvious than when I wrote this song. I demoed it, if stuttering memory serves me at all, with Semi-Twang, in our loft as things fizzled slowly out and recorded it again with some stellar musicians in Nashville a few years later for my CD El Supremo. On mandolin is producer/multi-instrumentalist and now singer/songwriter Gurf Morlix, an all-around bad-ass with my favorite show-biz name. His name is so cool that I never even wanted to hear the real moniker. My brother Mike plays bass and sings a real nice high harmony—DNA makes a pretty decent reverb sometimes. Also chiming in on vocals (and keyboards) is the lovely and talented Joan Besen, who co-produced. This song was written because I love the way high tension lines look and I also love the way that combination of words sounds. It was an easy flow to capture once I had the first line and I still like to sing this from time to time, while I pretend I’m Levon Helm or Richard Manuel.

Thats good stuff, still have Big Pink somewhere with all my other albums and a I-Pod with about 2 hours of their songs Saw an H.B.O. thing with a train tour and a lots of great people playing a stops and just jamming. Should have recorded it but didn’t , sad.
