Is That All You?

Click: Is That All You

This is the original demo of a song that showed up about fifteen years after I wrote it on a solo project called The Shaming Of The True. It’s a good example of demo-itis. Though I like the version on that project, this earlier 4-track captures something more immediate. You kind of have to get down to business with only four tracks to play with. Leering, lascivious and lewd, I wrote it with my occasional muse Jerry Lee Lewis in mind—his sense of decency vacated the premises long ago, about the time he married thirteen year old Myra, his second cousin. I admit it also steals directly from Shake Rattle and Roll, especially the verse in that song where the “sun comes shining through.” I have a few in this vein, but it’s hard to strike the right tone. It helps if it is fun or funny, not all of them are. The secret to this song is in it’s one-note riff—it’s insistent to say the least. I don’t even know if you can call a melody that never changes a riff, we may need a better word. Anyway, it doesn’t let up and by the end of the song, I think we can hang a sold sign on it.
