The Thaw

Click: The Thaw

This is from Salty Tears and accurately describes my feelings about winter, if not love. To experience full blown SAD year after year is a test I keep studying for and failing. A cold wind down my neck or an unshakeable months-long chill is not my idea of paradise. As Wisconsin roasted this summer, one of the hottest here and just about everywhere, I still managed some perspective. I’d much rather complain about heat than cold. The song is supposed to be about love and on the surface the weather seems to be only a metaphor, but I just don’t think of it that way. It features the patented Semi-Twang “stately” groove. Nothing fancy, but it’s pretty unstoppable and it never messes up a song. Ever. The rest of the band adds angelic high harmonie, completely secure in their sexuality. If Frankie Valli is comfortable in the Callas territory, why not us? Mike Hoffmann gets to ‘sort of’ solo—that’s what he does really well. His playing lives on the edge between solo and rhythm—a twilight zone guitarist, you can set your melting Dali watch to him.
