Public domain, the burial ground of intellectual property, allows me to play with the bones of this mighty spiritual. It’s hard to hear New Orleans music and not want to be a part of it. And it may be hubris, but I could hear a good N.O. marching band play this. It helps that John Carr worked very hard on his second line parade rhythm over the years. This track features him most prominently and he definitely has it down. Also featured is the Bob Jennings horn section. There are at least three tracks of him to fatten up the proceedings and, while he plays a lot of horn when he gigs with Paul Cebar’s Tomorrow Sound, Semi-Twang offers fewer opportunities and he winds up warming the keyboard bench. Mike and Kelli from the Subcontinentals add harmony to this tribute to the city that care forgot. Every time someone I know tells me they are heading down there, I want to stow away in their luggage.
