Billy’s Heartsick

Click: Billy’s Heartsick

From Salty Tears and featuring the legendary James Burton on guitar. What can you say about the guy who played with Elvis, Ricky Nelson, Emmy Lou Harris and countless others? He was impressive on this one—we talked about it last night at a house concert Semi-Twang played and Mike Hoffmann recalls him getting this dobro on in one take. Amazing to behold and probably just another day at the office for James. I do remember that, sort of like Elvis had his Memphis cronies, James travelled with a fellow who seemed to function as his personal valet/synchophant. Nice enough guy—he claimed to own a chain of hush puppy restaurants based out of Las Vegas. The lyric by Michael Feldman is one of my favorites, a guy who works the angles and his best one is being a pity sponge. Mike has such incredible concision in his writing—he gets the guy in the very first verse: He will play on your heart strings / Gonna make them bend just like guitar strings / And the tune that he likes to pick / Billy’s heartsick.

Mmmm, nice dobro. I think I need to listen to “We’ll Sweep out The Ashes In The Morning” when I get home. It’s been a long time since I’ve read the credits on Salty Tears, too, so it seems I should give them another look, and the disc a spin, while I’m at it…
