Only Boy

Click: Only Boy

The first of two songs I wrote yesterday and the second one posted. It’s a toss off in a lot of  ways, but that can be deceptive. Songs that announce their seriousness are a bit of a turn-off for me and I imagine others, too. Sometimes a lighter, more entertaining song can have a longer shelf life than anthems and “masterpieces.” It’s good to recall that, after Sergeant Pepper, a lot of acts did their worst work trying to sculpt monumental works of cultural import that were also a little psychedelic. Do you remember The Rolling Stone’s Satanic Majesty’s Request? This is not to say that songwriters should check their ambition at the door, maybe just their egos. A more generous, audience directed song (that is to say, entertaining, I guess) can really hit the spot sometimes. It’s good to remember that Bob Dylan, who wrote Masters Of War, also gave us Country Pie and Peggy Day. I know that these songs are disposable and forgettable, but they also don’t suffer from high expectations. They are just there to enjoy and that’s why I hope you like this one. It’s not going to change the world, but if it works, it might help you appreciate it.
