Storm Comin’

Click: Storm Comin’

The little melody/hook that you hear throughout has been in my head a good twenty years. It had one or two serviceable lyrics attached but, really, it wasn’t going anywhere. And it also wasn’t going away. The breakthrough came yesterday—why not leave the melody unsung and write something in the gaps? An oddly surprising story came to me inspired by the ever-changing weather of late. It’s a meditation on scale, human and natural, and just how big nature is. It also evokes one of my favorite things in life, summer thunderstorms. On this matter there is some disagreement with my dog, who trembles and pants while looking for a place to hide. She gets part of a verse. This is the longest thing I’ve written in sometime and it might be influenced by Dave Alvin. We opened a show for him last week and he has nice way of taking his time and stretching out a story. This tune clocks in at just under five minutes—you won’t hear many from me beyond 3:25 which, in my peculiar belief system, is the ideal length for a song.
