A Lie That I Can Believe

Click: A Lie That I Can Believe

I do love this lyric by Perry Lamek, it’s the kind of thing that would inspire a long essay if I hadn’t gotten home from a gig at 3:30 the night before. I’m grateful that this song is at the top of my list tonight and also that it doesn’t show up when I search the songs I have posted—it means minimal effort on a night when that’s about what I can muster. Like many people, I resent lying—not the little white ones that get told everyday, more like the ones you hear from politicians before they admit the affair. The thing that really adds insult to the injury is when bad acting kicks in and the liar can’t seem to muster up the energy to make it believable. It compounds matters when you know someone is not telling the truth and they know you know and don’t even care! Anyhoo, I believe I’m wearing my self out here, so let me tell you a tad more about the song. I wrote it and demoed it many years ago with Perry and it had been going through my head before I came across it. In the wonderful revisionist realm that is my memory, I had given myself all the credit for the song. This was not done out of malice so much as poor memory and a strong identification with the lyric. I am happy to give Perry credit (I wish it were money) for a really great song and that’s no lie! (NOTE: This recording seems to exist mostly in the left channel—a good listening strategy is to tell yourself you are having a wonderful lo-fi experience.)
