Took A Shine To You

Click: Took a Shine To You

Hop in the Friday time machine—we’re going back to the late 1980s, where this recording was done standing in front a loud stereo and singing into a Walkman Pro cassette recorder. The music was playing on another cassette machine through my brother Mike’s AR speakers at the apartment we lived in back then. Heck of a way to overdub! The track was created by Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads, a Milwaukee native who was back living in his home town at the time. It is one smokin’ piece of ’80s funk. Jerry had given me many tracks to write to and later, when I went in the studio to lay down guide vocals, they were actually recorded on professional equipment. This was the first time I worked with a somewhat finished track and it was inspiring to hear the drums, bass and all those nasty keyboard sounds (along with Jerry, I think it’s Bernie Worrell). He wound up using three of our collaborations on his two solo records and one, Rev It Up, received a lot of airplay here and was a hit in Australia—the wallabees loved it! Be patient with the track, it’s ragged and rough sounding but the groove is pretty delicious.
