The Vine’s Doing Better Than The Tree — Prairie Oyster

Click: The Vine Is Doing Better Than The Tree

First of all, listen how great this band is! Wow! I’m listening now and marveling how soulful this track is and what a great singer Russell deCarle is and how great all the players are. I wrote this with Joan Besen, who adds that spooky sounding Wurlitzer. I had that title phrase in my head for a while before we wrote this—I thought it might make a good “A Star Is Born” kind of story. Joan is a good co-writer, she generates a lot of cool ideas and her playing is so hip it makes you feel that maybe you and your ideas  are too! The weird key change we came up with for the instrumental cements it for me and the long lingering outro tops it off. As it turns out, this CD didn’t do a lot for Prairie Oyster’s career. I hate to think that a brief association with me could doom them, but what else can I conclude? A wonderful band and they rarely play nowadays—a meritocracy this music business ain’t!
