You Gotta Be Strong

Click: You Gotta Be Strong

From The Shaming Of The True, self-released in 2008 on the prestigious Faux Real label, this song is an oddity, in fact it’s almost not a song. It barely rises to the minimum standards of what a song is—it’s under two minutes and the word count is low, low, low! It’s more like a chant or a pep talk to the guy in the mirror, a little advice for getting from here to there, ‘there’ being another day. Everyone I know is feeling the weight of current events. It feels like the bad guys are trumping (yes, I meant to use that word) the good guys on all fronts. Here in Wisconsin’s supreme court election, the Republicans somehow pulled 7,500 votes, the exact amount needed to avoid a mandatory recount, out of a hat in Waukesha County, a republican stronghold and spiritual home to our controversial governor. (He actually resides in Milwaukee County, but that isn’t stopping him from punishing it in every way he can.) He now has the rubber stamp he needs to forge ahead with plans to strip social services and do favors for rich friends. Around the country and the world, cruelty is rampant and nature seems to be jumping on. I was hoping for a slow news year, but that doesn’t seem to be happening. So while you are being buffeted by reports of tragic events coming in every day, save a little time to appreciate friends and family—have a few laughs, maybe a glass of something—listen to some music and… stay strong!
