Strange Things Have Happened

Click: Strange Things Have Happened

Written on one of our first exploratory trips to Nashville—I was in a hotel bathroom as my wife slept in the next room—perhaps a precursor to future WC songs? We had given up on the bed and breakfast for a few reasons. One, it was located in an area that someone informed us was “where they dumped the bodies.” We learned that after we had already paid so we decided to keep the room and sleep with our eyes open. Two, it was hard to sleep because, unlike Milwaukee, Nashville forgot to cool down at night.  Ninety degrees at midnight was unprecedented to us Yankees and it was very uncomfortable with no AC, but we weren’t ready to leave windows open and have murderers crawl in. Three, we were not told that a recently divorced and very depressed guy named Skeeter was staying in the back room. We were not in the mood to wake up to our new roommate swinging from the rafters or splattered on the walls. After a couple days of Skeeter, sweltering heat and paranoia, we ate the rest of the B&B money and got a nice cool hotel room, but Nashville had definitely gotten under our skin and was worming it’s way down to my subconscious. This song is only vaguely country to me, someone else listening might find it more so. To my ear it is more like a Johnny Cash parody. The demo is what it is, 4-track, drum machine and probably closer to the Man In Black’s range than mine—but I like the tale of woe with it’s crash into a farmer’s field. Later I worked that scenario into Nervous Energy. That never really happened to me, I tend to crash in other places.

Don’t give a rat’s ass about the drum machines. Doesn’t bother me at all. Like the 4-track sound, too. Added to my Favorite JS Songs list immediately. Right up there with A Short Eternity and Jesco White. I’m a Ca$h-head at heart. Hear some BD here, but more JC! Very, very nice, John!
