Swing Shift

Click: Swing Shift

I’ve been trying to get a decent recording of this song for close to 30 years. Every couple years I take a swing at this pinata of a song and still, no candy shower. My fingers get tied in knots and I get a real good idea of my limitations as an instrumentalist. This one comes closer to what I’ve been aiming for than some past attempts, but to play the way it needs to be played, I would have had to start studying jazz and doing some serious woodshedding at about age eighteen. At that time I was into the Beatles, the Stones—anything British. I can play a lot of their songs, I’m proud to say, but Django Reinhardt I ain’t! This one goes out to my friends John and Don who really can play swing and standards—they know and I know you have to put in some long hours when you’re working on the swing shift.

Django? Man, lower your sights just a tad there! Geesh. He’s a Ghost….almost mythical, beyond legendary. I would just love to learn even a few of Phil Keaggy’s and/or your “mistakes” and I’d be VERY happy. This has a Knopfler feel to it, or could it just be that Swing reference as in “Sultans of”??? Well Done, Juan…..uhmmmmm, John! C’mon this has to at least put a fracture in the Pinata. Be proud. :>)
