The Wrestler

Listen Here: The Wrestler

I call the menacing chap above The Blogger, he wants to put Art Garfunkel in a figure-four grapevine, the most painful of all wrestling holds.  It may appear I’m jumping on a bandwagon, but this is not an attempt to cash in on last year’s award winning movie of the same title — it was written long before Mickey Rourke was hearing Oscar whispers. I do admit the title was selected with the full knowledge that Paul Simon had already earned masterpiece status for his song The Boxer, but I couldn’t think of anything else to call it. The idea was more musical than lyrical and I was desperately grasping for a title as the song was nearing completion  and I went through the lyrics. This happens to me from time to time — I start noodling and  a couple lines and a melody occur to me. Before I know it, I’m a couple verses in without a real lyric hook and I keep going forward on faith. Soon I am in a funny place where a bunch of titles almost work, but none really do. This might be the definition of a failed song, still I can’t hit erase, because something keeps pulling at me. In this case it’s the little musical refrain in the middle. If REM doesn’t have to make sense, why should I? Anyway — it’s me, my guitar and a little reverb, lost in space, ready to blogulate some choirboy.
