The Wages Of Sin (Demo)

13 Wages Of Sin

Well look who’s back — If it isn’t the old paymaster himself! Last week I posted the Semi-Twang version of this song and this week we go back to original demo which I cut at Blue Planet in Nashville. It was a session I split with Robbie Fulks — he demoed two of his songs and I did two of mine. On of his was the notorious F**k This Town. I told him he didn’t need to work blue, very sage show-biz advice, I thought, and it promptly became his most requested tune. In situations like that I get a sense that maybe I’m in the wrong business. I love Robbie and his music and tonight, at The Hideout in Chicago, he is toasting one of my favorite Milwaukee artists, Mike Fredrickson, who’s new recording “Souvenirs” I just co-produced. He is going to make him sit in the front of the club wearing a crown as he and his many stellar guests play songs from his catalog. Oh to have time on one’s hands! But then again, an idle mind is the devil’s workshop and you know what that pays!

Addenda: There is a whole other topic we could discuss here and that is the futility of writing songs like this in Nashville and the reverse career implications you might expect. I am sure I’ll get around to that at a later date!
