Baby I’ll Be There

Lyrics by Micael Feldman, done quite early in our partnership. This one blew my little old mind when I read it and what you hear here is exactly what was on that page. Effortless until you try it. From the same collapsed sessions as yesterday’s song, this one features the amzingly laid back and retro-minded Peter Mulvey, who adds a nice second part on guitar. He is a singer and songwriter who has studied the great American songbook, so he’s perfect for this tune. It was intended to conjure a different time—I’d like to think Bing Crosby or Louis Armstrong would have taken a swing at this one if they could have heard it. Every musical idea in this song is pre-rock, the chords are very Tin Pan Alley. The bar count is something else, though, I’m afraid it works out to a very un-even 11 measures per verse. That’s perverse.
